Description

A healthier take on classic brownies, made with wholesome ingredients.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup mashed ripe banana (about 2 medium bananas)
  • 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, combine the mashed banana, honey or maple syrup, applesauce, melted coconut oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. If using, fold in the dark chocolate chips.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
  8. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use a good quality cocoa powder.
  • You can substitute other sweeteners like agave nectar for honey or maple syrup.
