Description

A basic and flavorful red lentil dahl recipe that is quick to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup red lentils, rinsed
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. Combine rinsed red lentils and water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until lentils are soft.
  2. While lentils are cooking, heat vegetable oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Cook until seeds begin to pop, about 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in turmeric powder and chili powder. Cook for another 15 seconds.
  4. Pour the spiced oil mixture into the cooked lentils. Add salt and stir well.
  5. Simmer for another 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Stir in fresh cilantro before serving.
